THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A CLOCK There are several things to consider when buying an antique, vintage or
modern clock. Listed below are several factors that you may find useful
in the process. It is not intended that this list be considered
all-inclusive, as there are likely additional factors that will be
important to you. Ultimately, the decision to purchase a clock is a
personal decision based upon many factors.
The case — what is its style, dimensions, finish, coloration, does it
appeal to you visually, what is its condition;
The dial — what is its overall appearance, size, finish, the type of
numerals, is it signed by the maker or reseller, is it original or a
replacement, does it appeal to you visually, what is its condition; [not
all clocks have signed dials]
The hands — do the hands seem properly proportioned to the dial and are
both the hour and minute hand of similar style, what are their
condition;
The glass — is it flat, convex, round or other shape, does it have a
reverse painting, is it original or a replacement, what is its
condition; [not all clocks have glass]
The label — does it have a paper label, does the label match the movement
and case, what is its condition; [not all clocks have labels]
In mechanical clocks — what is the duration of a full winding of its
springs or weights--is it 8 days or 30 hours or some other duration;
Its time sounding mechanism — is the clock designed to strike or chime,
does it have an alarm mechanism or play music, is the sound appealing to
your ear; [not all clocks strike, chime, play music or sound an alarm]
Its age — when was the clock made, does the date or the period in which it
was manufactured have personal significance to you; [the precise date of
manufacture of antique and vintage clocks can not always be
determined—many times it is only possible to estimate the age of the
clock]
Its maker — what clockmaker or company made the clock, does the maker or
place of manufacture have personal significance to you;
Does the clock work — is the clock in running order, does it strike or
chime and operate as designed;
Economic Value — is the clock priced appropriately according to all of
the factors under consideration, will it likely appreciate in value over
time, does it have current or future resale value;
Non-Economic Value — does the clock provide a nostalgic value to you, to
other members of your family or to those whom you intend to give it as a
gift, will it provide decorative value in your home or place of
business; if the clock is of unusual design or otherwise unique in some
way, will it provide conversation value in your home or office;
The seller — is the dealer or individual from whom you intend to purchase
the clock reputable and knowledgeable about the clock; did he disclose
the condition of the clock and fully disclose the terms of the sale.
Use of the above listed factors as a guide along with any other factors
you deem appropriate will help ensure that your decision to purchase an
antique, vintage or modern clock is both a memorable and enjoyable
experience.
